AFGHANISTAN

French 1886 Lebel brought back from Afghanistan, only one of about 30 with any afghan markings and these are restricted to these seen on the hilt. Interestingly there was no evidence of the rifles found. Both white metal and brass hilts with and without quillions were noted.

Dual stamped local made 1888, note odd placing of rivets

1888 with long blade, peculiar to Afghanistan, has Afghan marking on blade and no UK markings at all. Blade has a very wide spine similar to some of the UK volunteer models and the edge is completely unsharpened. Scabbard has integral chape and frog stud on the locket.

Afghan marked 1888, probably locally made looking at quality, although better than many it still shows very obvious machining marks. There is no cleaning hole in the hilt or pommel, but crossguard is marked and there is a distinctive ricasso marking, though not he same marking as reported in Skennerton or seen on other Afghan 88's

UK 1903 Volunteer with what I have take to be Afghan tang marks

Hilt, blade is unmarked except for writing on tang and Wilkinson London makers mark

Unknown script on tang

Both visible tangs are marked with different text

Wilkinson London marked

Very early RFI made 1907, possibly even a de hooked one
Local made variation of the 1913/17 pattern bayonet. This is not one of the early ones to come out of the country and i suspect it is a repro for "tourists". In which case is the locket mark the number the guy has made, or is it a real mark

ARGENTINA

A French 1866 manufactured in 1868, the quillion has been bent backwards over the hilt but that is the only modification. I know of one more of these that came in a steel mounted leather scabbard - unfortunately this came without one.

Vendor reported that he had picked it up from a flea market in Argentina and delivery was from there, As most South American countries have little dealings with arms such as these I must assume that the bayonet came from there or possibly some other local country. Probably use as a side arm of some sort.

1875 Remington, similar in hilt style to French 1866 and several other brass hilted bayonets

This has the un chamfered "Remington" hilt without the muzzle ring cut out of the1866. These blades are not common in full length as many were cut down for use with other weapons, see Argentina for a cut down example

AUSTRIA

Hard to find full length 1867 bayonet. Most of these were cut down to the shorter length of the later 1873 Yataghan

Made by JUNG

Close up of right hilt, showing the sight on the top of the muzzle ring and 5 rivet grips with external spring. Ricasso has GF stamp on it. Unit marks on crossguard

Close up of left hilt Maker C&J over W mark on Ricasso

Re gripped 1867 short fitted with w 3 rivet wooden grip, there are apparently 2 and 4 rivet versions as well. Even more interesting is that this is a an NCO version having the pommel ring for attaching trodels (knots)

1873 Yataghan, this model has short lightened blade used on the modified 67 and 70 models. It also uses a coil spring rather than the earlier external spring

AUSTRALIA

1907 made by Lithgow, complete with early hooked quillion. The Australians continued to make the quillioned ones later than the UK but still made very small numbers. This is made in 1914, a year later than the UK stopped production.

Bayonet is unit marked but does not match the scabbard

Frog is a modified Ross frog, and it came with the bayonet.

The damage to the point is very old .

Quillioned 1907 Naval marked but some marking seem to indicate Australian use

Pommel mark, 3? 3 is also district for New South Wales mark seen on throat piece see below

AC maker is early scabbard producer, scabbard has N mark so is probably the original scabbard, probably with chape replaced with external chape rather than early internal one.

Scabbard shows Sold from Service mark, was it sold to Australia?

N mark on ricasso rather than the later pommel marks seen, this is period correct

NSW mark on throat has similar 4 digit serial to pommel although not matched but close

10 1908 shows very early made example

AUstralian No6 trial cross guard.jpg (71126 bytes) No6 trials?

What appears to be a 17" No6 trials bayonet, however there are dimensional differences and a lack of markings. The poor quality blade is more like the South African 1907 in forging quality so is probably a fake. Late pattern cross guard with large muzzle ring used for Jungle Carbine trials )

Ricasso marks on Lithgow

Stitch line on both sides of scabbard
Double stitched scabbard reworked with large round WWII press stud and phosphate finish. These scabbards were only made for a couple of years in the early 20's so it is strange to see one reworked post WWII as it was an obsolete pattern by then. Throat has been replaced but chape is possibly original period piece, interestingly there is no makers marl on the leather

R marks and ^ indicate post WWII rework

Blade point shows heavy wear to phosphate finish. I suspect that this is from use in Bayonet practice as it is limited to the point and is longitudinal

Blade is WWII manufacture

and has all normal WWII marks

Paratrooper Bayonet, another attempt to make a bayonet a more multi purpose tool. This is a real one to compare against my fake

Reproduction Machete Bayonet MkI

based on the 1907 hilt with an all new machete style blade, these were trialed but saw only limited numbers made

Canvas scabbard has integral web frog. Some Reproductions can be found with original scabbards as it seems more scabbards were made than blades

1882 for the Comblain rifle. Hilt and cross guard is like the 1899 with a slightly more open quillion, the blade is like the French 1874 Gras. Not one of the more common bayonets

Matching numbers on cross guard and scabbard however the poor condition of the scabbard on this very rare bayonet make it impossible to photograph

Belgian 1935, this should have a scabbard with a forked attachment to allow a BAR rifle to be used for AA use. This all steel bayonet is very uncommon and the scabbar deven more so.

This bayonet has very strange damage to the pommel it has broken off just where it should expand to take the normal cross bolt locking system with pommel slot

Pommel end is held into place by a simple cross bar
