Sword Bayonets India to Yugoslavia

For sorting purposes I have chosen Bayonets with above 12" blades to be classed as "Sword"

INDIA, Indonesia IRAQ, Ireland, Israel, Italy, Japan, KOREA, Norway, Pakistan, Persia, Portugal,

INDIA
	State Yataghan, based on the UK 1856 has wooden checkered rather than the compressed leather grips of the UK models Completely devoid of markings Crude brazing on tang to pommel joint. Identification is tentative based on quality of the manufacture and the general style of the piece, dimensions are similar to but not identical to the UK Yataghan
	UK 1903 in a rare Indian pattern scabbard Scabbard has loops top and bottom to take straps for helve carrier Is the 15 the manufacture date? Pommel unit marks indicate bayonet was issued to Ghurkha Rifle regiment 1903 Enfield made 1903
	Could this be a Mk IV or V, the hilt is a MkIII, the blade a MkII* but the blade is shorter with a false edge Frog is doubled over, to produce a shorter mount False edge on shortened blade
	India 1907 made by RFI in 1919
	No1 MkI* with added false edge Ricasso marks Added false edge, showing the way the fullers extend through the point of the blade, due to the blade being shortened from 17" to 12.2"
	P13 bayonet Bayonet has had a false edge ground onto the blade point. Ricasso has the * mark added as per the 1907's
	Wilkinson made 1907 in Indian brass mounted scabbard Locket and Chape were both Brass made rather than the steel of the normal 1907 scabbard
	No 1 Mk I* (UK 1907) marked DP for Drill purpose.
	No 1 Mk II
	No 1 Mk II made by NWR in 1943
	India 1907 made by RFI in 1919 crossed out ALL marking on pommel Indian inspection marks RFI makers mark
	RIAF marked 1907, Royal Indian Air Force only existed for a couple of years pre independence and post WWII Grip markings on RIAF marked 1907 with sold from service mark on pommel, blade cam in WWII made UK scabbard.

INDONESIA
	Indonesian used 1907 made by Australia. Scabbard is made from wood and uses the original locket from the 1907 scabbard. The 1907 on the ricasso is interesting but it is not known its significance

IRAQ

Ex UK issued 1907 with Arabic text and new all leather scabbard. This was picked up outside Baghdad by a US trooper.

Any translation of lettering or identification of he button on the strap of the scabbard would be appreciated.

IRELAND

A French Gras modified to fit the Vertelli rifle as supplied to the UVF - along with similar bayonets modified to fit the GEW88

Rivets have been ground flush after refitting grips after plating

Slot shows evidence of having been mounted on a rifle several times and is thought to be a honor guard blade rather than a dress blade

St Etienne 1876 manufacture

Gras modified for UVF (Ulster Volunteer Force) for GEW 88 during rebellion

Shaved hilt of Gras

Lock stud extension to allow blade to lock on weapon other than for which it was originally made.

ISRAEL

Yugoslavian long M1924 used by Israel, has Israel army mark on hilt

ITALY
	1891 TS, with unusual transverse lock arrangement on pommel. Bayonet is mounted on barrel and then rotated to lock on stud A rather poor example of an uncommon blade, it shows a lot of damage to the wooden grips Locking mechanism uses press button on pommel end to release lock Made by Brescia
	Bersaglieri volunteer unit bayonet, only 6000 of these blades were made Looks like the French 1842 with Yataghan blade and steel cross guard 1854 date
	M1891 Carcano
	Bayonet made using Carcano blade hilted to suit the SMLE rifles supplied to Italy after WWII, scabbard is UK scabbard with M44 makers marks that has been cut down and an Italian Carcano throat fitted. Hilt modified to fit onto the SMLE rifle

JAPAN
	Murato 18, missing grips and pommel lock. Still has chrysanthemum (Mum) on crossguard and makers mark on ricasso. Currently I do not know the meaning of the characters on the pommel

	Hoten made Arisaka, has oval washers for screws, 50th series blade added 30/11/03

	Training bayonet, grips have screws from alternate sides, Identified by Juken 30 as issued to the Tokyo University, the two grip marks and the alternate grip screws gibing the identification added 30/11/03

	Late pattern T30 by Jinsen in wooden scabbard. Variation P by Johnson's nomenclature added 27/7/03

	Wooden scabbard has no throat piece...
	Is bound with string to hold separate halves together
	and has a square metal chape. Pi character on wooden scabbard is worth note
	T30 Arisaka with English names and serials on the pommel and grips. It is though that these may be souvenir marks made after the blade was captured

	Grips show possibly two names and serial numbers, Rose and ?
	ROSE name on the pommel, or is this a unit designation
	Training Arisaka, crudely made with very narrow fullers and blunt blade. Cross guard and pommel are only secured with single rivets producing a slack fit.
	Training blade has a totally unsharpened blade
	Clearly visible are the single rivets holding the pommel and crossguard (poorly)
	Almost mint T30 Arisaka made by Tokyo arsenal with a W stamp below the makers symbol, 'W' for the Koishikawa (Tokyo) arsenal
	W is clearly seen below the stacked canon ball logo for Tokyo arsenal on ricasso
	there is hardly a mark on this blade, post war rework?
	Tang serial number indicates that this blade is an early manufactured one, as later blades had a pommel serial.

	scabbard is made from canvas covered with a rubber coating, this scabbard is damaged so construction is clearly visible

KOREA
	Korean issued French M1842 Bayonet with BEEHIVE mark (Samuel Hopp manufacturer) on ricasso, the Korean identification is tentative based on Janzen

	Crown over J could indicate Belgian issue rather than Korean
	T30 Arisaka with scabbard modified to attach to US belt webbing.
	Makers marks of Tokyo arsenal, small symbol under stacked canon balls is of unknown significance but one similar can be seen on my Chinese Mukden Arisaka

NEW ZEALAND

The least common of the three types of 1875 Snider. This is for the "medium" rifle with the bar on band muzzle ring

Kirschbaum makers mark and distinctive crown over AS inspection mark

Cross guard serial 157, Skennerton reports only 200 of this variation made

Raised muzzle ring of bar on band, as opposed to the more normal muzzle ring flush with top of hilt for bar on barrel

Dress 1907 all chromed with plastic coated hilt and scabbard, not sure if chroming is NZ or UK

Badge is UK unit

Pommel is marked NZ for New Zealand issue

NORWAY

	"Indian" MkII* bayonet, pommel markings have been indicated to me as being Pakistani, confirmation would be appreciated, I believe it may actually be Arabic but.....

PERSIA (IRAN)
	22/98
	Early Persian contract used ex Czech blades with markings deleted
	Makers marks left intact
	Czech pommel stamps not removed but you can just see the Persian Crest lightly over striking the 14P Czech mark
	Original L frog stud has been removed and French style strap added. I have another blade with the scabbard having original Czech marks struck out on the L shaped frog
	I am unsure as to the relevance of the tang marks and as to whether they are Czech or Persian

	Scabbard is ex Czech VZ23 which indicates this bayonet is one of the first contract blades
